The first preparatory step of Silent Illumination Chan is relaxation.
Relax your body and mind!
And every time you sit down, you should start by relaxing your body and mind.
Relax completely, and then 'just sit' while illuminating your whole body, observing all the sensations of your body.
The 'feeling' of sensation. Feeling is not the same as enlightenment.
What is feeling? It is simultaneously feeling your entire body, but not examining your body.
It's not inspecting part by part, but rather knowing that your entire body, your whole body, is sitting in meditation.
Even though some parts of your body might have no sensation, and some parts might have sensations.
However, you are attending to your entire body.
Regardless of whether there are sensations or not, you are universally illuminating, 'I am sitting in meditation,' 'I know my whole body is sitting in meditation' – this 'knowing'!
That is to say, I know I am sitting in meditation.
This is what we've already discussed: the 'Illumination' (照) in Silent Illumination is universal illumination, with no limitations set within this universal illumination; it is an equal knowing.
Therefore, in illuminating the whole body, you will not find a mind that clings to distinctions or opposition.
This can achieve a purpose, a preliminary purpose: the unification of body and mind.
What is meant by the unification of body and mind?
When you feel your own body, your body will produce sensations of gentleness, softness, warmth, and lightness.
Gentle, soft, warm, light!
Softness, 'gentle' and 'soft' are not quite the same!
'Gentle' is harmonious; 'soft' means, yes! Not hard!
Not hard! Your body has no obstacles.
When there are no obstacles, then the body seems to disappear!
Gentleness is a feeling of great smoothness, pliability, and harmony in the body.
And softness? It's also called pliability.
Softness means no obstructions, no stiffness.
That means no tension, no tightness!
No tense spots, no obstructions. That's why it's called soft.
Then, the warmth of comfort, you'll experience a warm sensation in your body, comfortable and cozy.
And then comes lightness!
After lightness, your mind is already very peaceful; lightness leads to peace.
So what is lightness? It's nimbleness, a feeling of no weight.
You may very likely notice, or feel, that gradually, your body's burden of weight becomes less and less.
You might even reach a point where there is no sensation, no feeling in any part of your body.
No sensation does not mean death!
No sensation is still quite gentle, warm, and it's precisely this feeling of 'warmth'!
Warmth, and 'lightness' — nimble, relaxed, without a sense of weight.
At this moment, there's no pressure on the body, no sensation of pain, itchiness, soreness, numbness, tension! These are gone.
At this time, your body is so light, lighter than cotton, lighter than silk floss.
There is no sense of weight, yet you know it is present.
You know it's present because there's no burden, no weight, but then? Being present is almost like not being present!
This is when body and mind are unified!
This is 'light-ease'; after lightness, the mind's burden is gone.
You have no mental burden, your body has no burden, your mind has no burden; at this time, you will feel very peaceful inside.
But after the mind is peaceful! There will be very few distracting thoughts, no delusions, and very few thoughts arising.
Are there thoughts or no thoughts? There are thoughts.
At this time, because your body is no longer an obstruction or a burden to you, its existence or non-existence is no longer an issue.
So where do you place your mind at this moment?
At this point, you might feel that there's nothing to do, nothing to do! Being able to maintain a state of 'nothing to do,' bright and clear.
Brightness and stillness, brightness and stillness. 'Brightness' (明) means clear and luminous, which is 'Illumination' (照).
And 'Stillness' (靜)? It's the stillness of quiet. What is the stillness of quiet? It is 'Silence' (默).
The body has no burden, yet the mind is very clear and very stable.
This is not 'boundlessness,' it's not just resting.
'Brightness' is not being muddled or confused.
Bright and still. Brightness, being very clear. Stillness, being very quiet.
At this point, you are very likely to enter a state of Samadhi (meditative absorption)!
In fact, after entering Samadhi, you will no longer have a sense of time and space.
If you still have a sense of time and space, you have not entered Samadhi.
In what's called 'space,' you still hear sounds, you are still aware of the environment—that is not entering Samadhi.
After entering Samadhi, space and environment are absent, and the sense of time will also not exist.
Therefore, for us, Silent Illumination Chan does not aim for you to enter Samadhi.
Silent Illumination Chan does not let you enter Samadhi.
It requires maintaining the function of 'Illumination' (照) even while in 'Silence' (默), ensuring it doesn't stop.
So, it must be 'Bright' (明).
At this point, your mind might not be able to maintain that 'Brightness and Stillness'!
Then you need to take a step further! Or rather, we call it a step further, but it's actually still about unifying the mind.
From body-mind unification to the unification of self and environment.
That means observing the entire environment.
This 'observation and illumination' (觀照) follows the same principle as observing the body.
In the environment, there might be the sound of bells, birds, rain, what else? Airplanes, cars, or perhaps you might even hear the breath of the person next to you, as well as body odor or scents.
Or in this room, there might be the fragrance of burning incense, or the scent of flowers, or the sound of people walking and even their moving shadows.
Whatever situation or sight you can perceive in the environment with your eyes, ears, body, or nostrils, you are equally, equally 'illuminating' (照).
Regarding this 'illumination,' please don't think of it as 'I need to find something to illuminate for a moment'? No!
The 'illumination' (照) of Silent Illumination is an equal 'illumination'.
Do not 'illuminate' selectively.
Anything in the environment! You illuminate it the same way you observed your body.
When observing the body, are you observing one part at a time, or the entire body?
As you know, it's observing the entire body.
Some parts of your whole body you have no sensation of, some parts you do have sensation of.
But your 'Brightness' (明) and 'Illumination' (照)! It illuminates everything.
Regardless of whether there's sensation or not, I know!
'Know' what? The body that is sitting in meditation.
Following the same principle, what we are now discussing as internal and external unification is 'observing'—observing what? Observing the environment, not observing the body anymore!
Illuminating the environment! What is this 'environment'? The surroundings.
The environment of your surroundings, do you understand? The environment.
Please do not choose; your mind is open, but not scattered!
And please do not imagine.
Choosing? Oh! I hear a bird singing, I really like this bird's sound! You choose it. No, that won't work!
Whether the bird sings two notes or one, whether it's one bird or two birds, it doesn't matter.
'Know' that a bird is singing, but do not choose the sound of the bird.
What about the sound of wind? Do you choose it? Do not choose the sound of the wind.
Rain sound? Do not choose the sound of rain.
Water sound? Do not choose any sound.
If your eyes are open, anything on the floor, on the wall facing you, or anything else you are facing.
You don't need to choose it. You are 'knowing' the whole.
You might say, 'I don't know that much about the whole'? That's fine.
You are not being asked to choose; know as much as you know!
You say, 'What if I don't know?' Amitabha, if you don't know, you just don't know!
You are not asked to imagine! Nor are you asked to inspect the environment!
You are simply saying, 'This is my responsibility!' In this way, you are saying, 'I know; knowing the environment as much as I know is enough.'
So this method is very effortless! Not strenuous at all!
You are not actively looking for things to examine, nor focusing on anything! No!
It means, you, sitting here now, because body awareness is already absent.
So now, illuminate the environment!
Like this, illuminate, illuminate, illuminate, until eventually, it's very likely that the environment is heard, known, but it's not in opposition to you.
It is you, and you are it.
It's not that you are 'illuminating' it.
Because when you are 'illuminating,' you are simultaneously in 'silence,' unaffected by it.
So this is your unification with the environment. What is unification?
Why does unification happen? We have mentioned that the 'Four Foundations of Mindfulness'—observing body, feelings, mind, and phenomena—all share a characteristic!
What characteristic? Impermanence is their characteristic. Within 'impermanence,' there is continuous letting go, and this process is 'selflessness' (anatta).
If there is 'selflessness,' then why would you still cling to it?
Then there are no distinctions!
With no distinctions, aren't the environment, your body, and your mind all merged together?
Therefore, at this time, when you are 'illuminating,' your mind also does not move.
So it is 'Silence' (默)! Unaffected by it.
And when 'illuminating' (照)? It is also in 'Silence' (默)!
'Silence' means being unaffected.
Therefore, the environment and you! Are not in opposition, but unified with you; that is, it is you, you are the environment, the environment is you.
This experience will arise.
When you are in this state of body-mind unification, you clearly know and illuminate all bodily and mental sensations, and even the subtle arising and cessation of thoughts, as being without self (anatta), and at the same time, these phenomena are also telling you that they are impermanent and selfless.
Your mind and the environment are mutually enhancing the will to be free from defilements; at this moment, mind and environment unify, illuminating each other with selflessness as the object of focus. This Dharma joy leaves no room for distracting thoughts and prevents suffering from arising.
Then this is me, and I am it.
When this experience arises, your mind and heart become vast and boundless.
Have you heard of the 'Four Immeasurable Minds'? The Great Brahma King cultivates loving-kindness, compassion, joy, and equanimity.
At this point, what is called vast and boundless is not imaginary.
In imagination, how big is space? How big is the universe? However you imagine it, it's still limited.
Instead? It's about not setting boundaries.
Not setting boundaries means boundless.
Not defining a boundary, but boundless—boundless what? Boundless brightness and stillness!
'Brightness and Stillness.' This achieves the same effect as when observing the body.
'Brightness and Stillness'! Then you will surely, ah! Someone will surely ask, 'Do we absolutely have to do it this way?'
Not necessarily!
If you observe your body very well, you can continue to observe 'Brightness and Stillness.'
'Brightness and Stillness'! Maintain it. Maintain your 'Brightness and Stillness'.
That is Silent Illumination! Then there's no need to necessarily observe the environment.
To observe the environment's surroundings.
Because when you observe the body, the body seems to disappear, and you don't know where to put your mind? You might not yet fully understand the Dharma.
So what do you do then? What do you do? Observe what?
Observe the environment, illuminate the environment.
So how do you 'illuminate' the environment? The principle is the same as observing the body.
What is the result? Your mind and heart become infinitely vast.
Infinitely vast what? 'Brightness and Stillness'!
Now I want to tell you all again, please do not imagine that 'Brightness' (明) means light, like the light from a lamp. No!
'Brightness' (明) means the mind is crystal clear; this is called 'Brightness'.
It's not, 'Oh! I see light!' That would be your hallucination.
If you genuinely see light, and others also see you radiating light, it's possible!
However? You would still say, this is an illusion, not 'Brightness,' not the 'Brightness' obtained through spiritual practice.
Is this 'Brightness' the wisdom of enlightenment? No! It is not!
This is the experience of your mind becoming clear and lucid—'Brightness'—arising during the process of practice.
This 'Brightness' is not what? It is not the state of enlightenment.
很好! Is this good? Very good! Very good.
'Bright and Still.' What is the meaning of 'Stillness' (靜)? The stillness of quiet, a mind that is extremely peaceful.
This discourse concludes here for now.
