Now, let us begin with basic relaxation.
The meaning of Mozhao Chan: 'Mo' means 'silence', the silence of being quiet and reticent.
And 'Zhao'? It means 'illumination', like the universal illumination of Buddha's light.
To clearly understand everything in your mind, without arising vexations, that is the meaning of 'Mozhao'.
To be able to keep your mind undisturbed by external environments, and undisturbed by your own inner vexations, this is called 'Mo'.
However, your mind is still very clear; you are not just resting.
Clear about what? Clear about your own mind, and how your mind reacts to the feelings and sensations of your body and environment.
This is called 'Zhao'.
When 'Mo' and 'Zhao' are used simultaneously, this is called Mozhao Chan.
So the meaning of Mozhao is: 'Very clear and lucid, but with no affairs in the mind!'
In fact, Mozhao Chan is also a part of the Four Foundations of Mindfulness meditation!
So how can one be very clear and lucid, yet have no affairs in the mind?
This first requires the foundation of 'Four Foundations of Mindfulness' meditation!
What kind of 'Four Foundations of Mindfulness' meditation foundation?
You must have a complete understanding of the whole connection between your body's inner and outer aspects, and a complete understanding of the patterns in your mind's inner workings and external behavioral operations. Knowing and understanding that the entire body and mind are processes of 'impermanence', 'non-self', not to be relied upon, and not to be grasped.
Because the mind is clear, once you 'Zhao', once you observe, by understanding that the ultimate reality is non-self, your mind simultaneously lets go of clinging.
That is why it becomes 'very clear and lucid, but with no affairs in the mind!'
'Mo' means no affairs in the mind, and 'Zhao' means being very clear and lucid about the condition of your body and mind.
Now, for those of you who are learning 'Mozhao' meditation for the first time, first and foremost, constantly, everywhere, be 'Zhao'!
Only by 'Zhao' can the purpose of 'Mo' be achieved.
What is 'Zhao'? It is knowing!
Knowing your own state, the state of your body and your mind, very clearly.
This is called 'Zhao'!
Knowing, being clear, without generating other thoughts—that is to say, no wandering thoughts arise! That is called 'Mo'!
In essence, 'Zhao' is 'Guan' (observing). It's called 'Guanzhao' (observing and illuminating)!
After you observe and illuminate, then you can achieve the purpose of 'Mo'.
'Mo' means your mind won't wander aimlessly; your mind is focused on the method.
Your mind is experiencing your method.
The mind has no two uses.
This is called Mo!
In fact, 'Mo' is also 'Zhi' (stopping). The 'Zhi' of Zhi-Guan (stopping and observing).
Mozhao means Zhi-Guan.
However, 'Zhi' and 'Guan' are slightly different from 'Mozhao'.
Mozhao is simultaneous.
Zhi-Guan? It's either stopping first then observing, or observing first then stopping.
Simultaneous Zhi-Guan, or equal Zhi-Guan, this is something that can only be achieved after considerable practice.
But in our Mozhao Chan? From the very beginning, these two aspects are applied simultaneously.
That's why it's called 'Mozhao'.
When you first enter the meditation hall, you definitely won't be able to know what 'Mo' is, or what 'Zhao' is.
But, if you can relax your body, and know that your body is relaxed.
Relax your mind, and know that your mind is relaxed.
Relax your body's muscles and nerves, relax your mind, do not dwell on past or future thoughts, do not worry.
Neither be anxious, nor be expectant.
This, then, is called relaxation.
If your body and mind are relaxed! And you know that your body and mind are relaxed! This is the beginning of Mozhao.
How do you relax your body and mind?
If you can't find a starting point, if you've never used the 'Mozhao' method before, then your first step must be to begin with loosening and relaxation.
Mozhao meditation definitely requires you to relax your body and your mind.
Body relaxation and mind relaxation are intrinsically linked!
If your mind is tense, your body will also be tense.
Conversely, if your body is tense, your mind will not be able to relax either.
So, start by practicing relaxation!
How to relax? Let's all practice now!
I will guide you while you practice.
First, please take off your glasses!
Please place your hands on your thighs. How should you place them? Just place them very steadily.
First, please close your eyes. After closing your eyes, do not strain your eyeballs. Not straining your eyeballs means not thinking with your mind, and then your eyeballs won't be strained.
Conversely, if your eyeballs are not strained, your mind will relax.
You must relax your eyeballs.
At this point, your mind will feel relaxed!
Eyeballs not strained, mind relaxed, then relax your facial muscles. After relaxing your facial muscles, relax your shoulders. Do not raise your shoulders, do not press them down!
Do not pull them back; let them be natural, without effort! This is your shoulders relaxing.
Then relax your arms, do not use effort in your two hands, do not feel like you have two hands, do not feel like you have a shoulder. And then?
Please relax your waist. If your waist is relaxed, your lower abdomen will relax. If your lower back is not relaxed or is tense, your lower abdomen will definitely also be tense.
Conversely, if your lower abdomen is relaxed, your lower back will also relax.
Waist relaxed, lower abdomen relaxed. At this point, your body will only have some feeling of weight in your buttocks, knees, and legs; your upper body will have no burden.
If there is a slight burden, it is also very subtle!
If you still feel a burden! Then start again from the beginning!
Relax your eyeballs, then, do not think with your mind, do not ponder, place it in a resting position!
However, still quite clear that you are resting.
Then relax your facial muscles!
What is called relaxation means no effort!
Do not tense up, do not, and also, do not intentionally force a smile; when you smile, your facial muscles are still tense!
Let your facial muscles be very, very gentle, relaxed, and natural.
Then relax your shoulders!
Shoulders, some people don't know how to relax them?
Please do not raise your shoulders, do not press your shoulders down, do not pull your shoulders back!
At this point, your shoulders are relaxed!
With relaxed shoulders, your arms will also relax. If you don't exert effort in your hands, you might not feel the presence of your hands.
At this point, your upper body! Should be very relaxed!
Then relax your waist! What is called relaxation means no effort.
At this point, if your waist is relaxed, your lower abdomen will also relax, or if your lower abdomen is relaxed and not using effort, your waist will also be relaxed.
If both these two parts can be fully relaxed, then from your head down to your lower abdomen, you should feel no pressure, only some sensation of weight in your buttocks, legs, and knees. The rest of your body should feel very light, with no sense of burden!
...If your body still feels tense or uncomfortable, start again from the beginning!
From the head, a bit more subtly. First, relax your head, relax your mind, your eyes, relax your eyeballs, relax your facial muscles, your shoulders, chest, hands, arms, waist, lower abdomen.
Then, even your legs, only the parts where your buttocks and the cushion make contact should have sensation; other areas, though in contact, should not feel any burden!
...In this manner, please continue to practice!
Practice, practice, practice until your body has no burden, but your mind! Is very clear!
And your heart is very peaceful.
This is 'Mozhao'!
A clear mind is 'Zhao', being very peaceful and tranquil is 'Mo'. 'Mo' and 'Zhao' simultaneously!
This is the method.
This is the preliminary method of 'Mozhao'! It's very easy!
When you feel drowsy, that means you are not 'Zhao'. When you are having wandering thoughts, that means you are not 'Mo'!
Therefore, always and everywhere, you must observe your own mind: is it very clear?
But 'very clear' and 'not clear' can often be hard to distinguish!
It's very easy to just fall asleep instantly!
For those who tend to get drowsy, your eyes cannot be closed!
Keep your eyes open; you can gaze directly into the distance, but do not use your eyes to look at anything!
Some people, when in 'Mo', feel drowsy and dull; when in 'Zhao', they are scattered and distracted! This is not 'Mozhao'!
When in 'Mo', it is not drowsiness; it means having no distracting thoughts, no wandering thoughts, being very clear, very clear that you have no distracting thoughts, no wandering thoughts. That is Mozhao!
So, do not let yourself fall asleep! Do not let yourself become drowsy!
How do you prevent yourself from being drowsy or scattered?
That is to continuously! One is relaxation, and the other is 'Guan' (observing)!
To be very clear in your 'Guan'! The 'Guan' of Guanzhao (observing and illuminating)!
This concludes our discussion for now.
You practice relaxation, 'Mo' and 'Zhao'!
