The phenomena of nature are always subtle. Through constant observation and contemplation, we can gain a deeper understanding and awareness of life.
Many people have this question: What is the meaning of life? What is its purpose?
The impermanence and change of all things in the universe and life itself, this is a fact.
Everything is constantly changing; there is nothing that remains constant. The impermanent phenomena of nature are the most precious insights that "truth" brings to us.
This very fact of impermanence is precisely the message that "truth" conveys to us.
"Impermanence" is indeed the messenger of "truth."
Constantly pursuing will never lead to finding the value of life. Only by letting go of discrimination and attachment can we return to the truth of nature.
We maintain the illusion of the "suffering" of samsara through continuous erroneous perceptions, judgments, and differentiations, from this life to the next, unwilling and reluctant to break free.
We find joy in this, but it is not a stable happiness. Deep within, there still hides an unrest that can disappear at any moment.
The Earth rotates, life is impermanent, the mind is restless; change is a common characteristic.
From the theory of Earth's rotation and practical experience, we know that change and movement are for the purpose of maintaining balance; this is a universal characteristic.
From this, we draw a conclusion: it is imbalance that creates impermanent life.
But why does imbalance arise? This is the big question! It's like a seesaw principle: discrimination, comparison, opposition, and impatience, which arise from nothing, are the two ends of the seesaw.
When you stand on one side, a mind of pursuit and aversion simultaneously arises, naturally driving you towards the other side. You can only constantly run back and forth between the two ends of the scale, without a day of stopping. Buddha called this "suffering"!
Even if you use meditation methods to reduce inner discrimination and opposition, even reaching meditative concentration and balance, where the scale maintains neutral balance and the mind seems peaceful, the problem is that the scale itself is still there, and the environment outside the scale is also present. The possibility of the environment influencing the scale still exists.
Only by simultaneously letting go of the opposing ends of the scale and discrimination, when the middle ground disappears, the scale naturally ceases to exist, and the environment finds no object to interact with. The scale represents the discriminating mind that clings to self-existence, and the environment represents the good and bad karma accumulated since beginningless time.
Why can simultaneously letting go of the opposing ends truly and effectively remove the discriminating mind, allowing your pure, non-self nature, free from any attachment, to naturally manifest?
For example, imagine a white paper in front of you, but there's a black dot on it. If you only want the white and not the black, you might try to erase the black dot, leaving only white, feeling that your troubles are gone. However, the black trouble is still there; it hasn't truly been erased. This is because the background of white is precisely black, and the background of black is white. They exist in this world as mutually dependent counterparts.
Therefore, when you want to remove this black trouble, you must simultaneously remove the white as well. Only then can you achieve the one pure, trouble-free color that you desire.
Or for another example, suppose the black dot represents a bad heart, and the white dot represents a good heart. We would all say, "I am a good person with only a good heart, not a bad one." But when your inner self still judges, "this is a good person, that is a bad person," can you still be considered a truly good person?
Ah! In this world, there is nothing that remains eternally unchanged, and there is no substantial "self" that truly exists! Therefore, do not discriminate.
And when the wisdom of non-discrimination manifests, you will discover that the distinctions and oppositions that arise within your mind, because they are opposing, are in fact perfectly corresponding and just right for each other. They are precisely balanced, and there is no need to seek outside yourself. The external environment is also the same; whether you discriminate or not, it is always balanced. There is only one singular principle of equality.
Conversely, this means that the principle of equality already contains all the merits you seek or wish to achieve. Since one Dharma encompasses all merits, it is inherently complete and inherently equal.
Then naturally, there is nothing to be done in your mind; you can handle any moment with peace, without any attachment. No attachment means emptiness (Sunyata), which is one way we describe truth.
However, being without attachment does not mean you can do whatever you want without regard for cause and effect. Rather, it means having no prejudice in your heart, not being influenced by any erroneous views or afflictions, and being able to align with the natural, perfectly appropriate principles, clearly playing your role, finding peace wherever you are, and having nothing troubling your mind.
For instance, consider a tree. Birds can build nests in it, cats use it to sharpen their claws, and elders find shade beneath it. Sometimes we cut it down to make tables and chairs, or even to start a fire, turn it into fertilizer, food, or oxygen. The tree has infinite functions, even acting as a microcosm of the entire world, precisely because the tree itself is not attached.
Because the tree does not say, "I can only do this or I cannot do that." If a tree were to say, "I can only have one function," then it would lose its very purpose as a tree. In that case, this world would forever be unable to change!
No life! Utter silence! If it's dark, it stays dark forever. If it's bright, it stays white forever. No impermanence ever? No samsara ever? No life? Nothing at all?
This is impossible and contradicts the truth! Therefore, emptiness (Sunyata) does not mean nothingness.
It can be both existent and non-existent; it doesn't dwell in existence nor non-existence. It's just very clear, clear about what? Clear that there are no problems, this is the view of emptiness.
