(A story from the 1999,9,21 Earthquake in Taiwan) During the Earthquake...
Elder Master Jing-Xin arrived at a monastery. He had heard this was a place of strict monastic discipline, located in the hardest-hit area of the earthquake.
After entering, he saw the resident monastics and the guest prefect. They weren't dressed in grand robes like those in large temples.
Their cassocks and traditional robes were heavily patched and mended. They looked quite impoverished, living a very simple life.
Thus, as Elder Master Jing-Xin looked around, he uttered only one sentence: "I feel deeply ashamed."
Some people, seeing monastics live a simple life, might say: "Master, seeing how poor you are, I feel so heartbroken!"
When the eyes make contact with external objects, the mind reacts right there.
This feeling is then transmitted into the heart, giving rise to self-referential memories, imaginations, and discriminations.
Then it sends electronic signals to the brain to produce chemical changes, releasing "acidic" substances to the inner being, which then creates that "sour" feeling.
Therefore, our emotions, feelings, and sensations are felt within the mind.
Whatever you wish to do is also thought in the mind, while the brain is merely an organic messenger for the body.
We must first understand our own mind-body phenomena; only then can we understand how life comes into being.
Without understanding, we are simply dragged along, and the mind cannot be its own master.
That is why we use four sections to understand mind-body phenomena, which are the fundamental meditation methods of the Four Foundations of Mindfulness.
Broadly speaking, the Four Foundations of Mindfulness refer to: the body, feelings, the mind, and all mental phenomena discerned by the mind.
Known as mindfulness of the body, mindfulness of feelings, mindfulness of the mind, and mindfulness of mental phenomena – that is, body, feelings, mind, and Dharma.
Our life phenomena are composed of the physical body from the material world and the consciousness from the mental realm, operating in mutual interaction.
What perceives, remembers, judges, and thinks is actually our mind, not just the brain.
The mind's past habitual actions are associated with a transparent place within the heart's blood vessels, called the "mind-door," the seat of the mind.
The "mind-door" is a physical entity, like a mirror; when the mind passes through the mind-door from the left, a change in consciousness (cognition) arises on the right.
(Image file)。 This principle is somewhat like a virtual host image file on a computer.
This image file determines our future.
At the time of death, it sends signals to a "cloud drive," which then transmits them to, or directly gives them to, another suitable computer.
This cloud can be likened to the ultimate truth of the universe—the "space of non-self."
When you possess the wisdom to depart, or decide no longer to create distinctions and oppositions, you can remain in the cloud.
And will no longer experience the inverted world of birth and death.
How do we come to understand the Four Foundations of Mindfulness regarding the phenomena of body and mind?
When our mind, through contact with eyes, nose, ears, tongue, and the skin of our body,
Also possesses a transparent space that receives messages from its contact with the external environment.
What returns to our inner self from these messages are "sensations" and "feelings."
From these received sensations, after logical thought and judgment within our memory,
Principles of differentiation and opposition, along with all the phenomena we perceive in the world, are generated.
This is what we call "Dharma" or "mental formations."
In other words, what the mind receives from outside the body is "sensation."
And the concepts generated by the mind from its internal recollections are all "Dharma."
For instance, your inner views, thoughts, and perceptions of the world differ greatly.
This is why everyone perceives a different world, necessitating a significant amount of time for communication.
One perspective is looking from outside inwards, which is "sensation."
The other is looking from inside outwards, which is "Dharma."
So, what clings between the inner and the outer is this "body" and "mind."
The "mind" is the bridge that connects and reacts to these inner and outer phenomena of body and mind.
The "body" is matter, formed by the changing combinations of earth, water, fire, and wind.
The "mind" is like "a mirror and light," reflecting back and forth. That is why it is also called the "magician."
For example, when a galaxy explodes in outer space,
Its light travels for tens of thousands of light-years to reach our eyes.
It reflects back and forth on the wall, and thus we see this space, this image, in our minds.
However, the light itself vanished a very long time ago!
Therefore, our reacting mind is an unreal, untruthful magician!
From this reaction to that, and then from that reaction back here,
This intermediate process is what we call the "self."
My perceived body, self-perceived forms, images, sounds, time, and space, and so on.
The "self" cannot be controlled.
How can this be explained?
For instance, the mind, reflecting back and forth, is like continuously flowing water.
You cannot grasp it with your hands, change it, or control it!
Otherwise, your efforts will be in vain.
Just like the grains of rice we eat,
If I hold a handful of rice and let the grains fall one by one from my hand downwards,
What will you see?
You will see a white line connecting my hand to the ground.
But does this line truly exist?
No, it does not!
Therefore, this white line is an illusion generated by our memory.
Or, the environment appearing under a light flickering at 60 Hz is also an illusion.
Because if you observe it closely, it disappears in an instant.
Light reflects from the left wall to the right, and then from the right back to the left.
It reflects back and forth, and only then can you perceive the space here, isn't that right?
But if your eyes were a little sharper,
Wouldn't you be able to see the flickering bright and dim scenes under the light?
In that case, you wouldn't clearly see everything in this space.
Nor would you believe that these images are real or perpetually existing, would you?
It is also because of the dullness of our mind that illusions and memories are generated.
This is what makes our perceived images and sense of space seem to exist continuously.
Thus, we live within illusions. From this principle, we can clearly understand.
Why do the Earth and all things in the universe rotate?
The Earth rotates to maintain balance; because there is opposition, things constantly move between two sides.
To maintain balance.
However, continually moving back and forth like this is futile!
What needs to be adjusted is the illusion that creates this opposition.
Therefore, when we clearly understand that we live within illusions and after careful observation,
We will unravel and break free from this dreamlike, falsely opposing, and cyclic world of birth and death.
This is the ultimate purpose of our practice of wisdom and meditative absorption.
Our life operates through the body and the mind.
The body is composed of matter; it possesses taste, fragrance, and nutritional components.
And it also exhibits the four great elements: earth, water, fire, and wind. This is our body.
The external environment likewise contains these four great elements.
For example, the softness and hardness of bones and hair are characteristics of the Earth element.
The Water element has adhesive and moist characteristics.
Allowing the body's skin and the earth on the mountains to cling together without collapsing.
The Fire element is the body's temperature, capable of changing and generating new substances, thus aiding the body's functioning.
The body's respiration and blood circulation represent the Wind element, possessing the power to propel and to restrain.
The four great elements—earth, water, fire, and wind—along with the temporary characteristics of nutrition, taste, and fragrance, constitute the main phenomena of change within the body.
They are not permanently unchanging.
They simultaneously appear and vanish in an ongoing, continuous cycle of change.
The speed of these fluctuations is such that within a single snap of the fingers, there are ninety instances of arising and passing away.
The body, along with external substances like plants, similarly exhibits the natural phenomena of change involving earth, water, fire, and wind.
However, unlike inert matter, your body, precisely because it has a "mind" that reacts, is capable of experiencing life phenomena such as memory, thought, sensation, and habitual behavior.
At the moment of death, the very last thought-moment when the life faculty ceases, it will be like a radio signal...
It emits a signal, much like your computer sending a final signal to a cloud drive.
To be downloaded and recorded by another new computer. And it can only be recorded once.
The thoughts and habits of that final thought-moment will determine the path of rebirth in the next life.
The "mind" is, in essence, a directional behavioral response.
The mind of the past—meaning your habits, personality, and behavioral patterns—resides within the seat of the mind, called the "mind-door."
Past habits are recorded there, giving rise to mind-consciousness, much like a computer image file.
Then, through the eye-door, ear-door, nose-door, tongue-door, and body-door, it performs continuous back-and-forth reactions.
Generating new sensations, memories, thoughts, and behaviors, ultimately becoming a living entity endowed with spirituality, consciousness, and thought.
The various sense-doors—eyes, ears, nose, tongue, and body—are the material aspects of the body.
They are also transparent material entities, like a mirror.
What is sensitive to memories, thoughts, and perceptions of both past and present is your "mind-door."
Through the eyes, ears, nose, tongue, body, and mind, the six doors receive forms, sounds, odors, tastes, tactile sensations, and mental objects, generating clear responses.
At the same time, they allow the mind to pass through these doors and generate new experiences.
These various experiences alter the image files in the mind-door, allowing you to develop new ideas, thought patterns, and cognitions.
Whether our eye, ear, nose, tongue, and body faculties are complete or possess unique characteristics,
Is profoundly related to the karma and behavioral habits of past lives, and the merits of this present lifetime.
Our mind, within this body, constantly "moves about." The speed of the mind's arising and ceasing,
Is seventeen times faster than that of the physical body composed of the four elements.
In a single thought-moment, there are hundreds of millions of such arising and ceasing events.
It is precisely because the mind is faster than the material body,
That the "mind" is able to perceive the body's existence,
And to depend upon and rely on the body.
For example, beings in the ghost realm can attach themselves to trees; this is due to the different reaction speeds of mind and matter.
The "mind" is also called "mental formation" (action); you can imagine the "mind" as being like light waves or electronic signals.
Just like sunlight or lamplight reflects and illuminates this space, bouncing between walls, allowing you to see and know the environment.
Our mind is similar; it runs within our body and consciousness, making you feel as if you truly have a physical form and a thinking mind.
If your mind observes more carefully, you would know that this light is 60Hz, a process of brightening and dimming 60 times per second.
So, if your observation were faster, you would only see a flickering process, and wouldn't perceive the lit space as continuously existing.
For example, if I let grains of rice fall continuously, you would see a white line connecting my hand to the floor, wouldn't you?
This is an illusion created by the mind's slowness in remembering the previous image; there isn't actually a real line.
Just like a distant solar system explosion; we see it because of the light, right?
The mind reacts and distinguishes, right?
But by the time we see it, that solar system had actually disappeared tens of thousands of light-years ago, right?
Do you have this feeling?

Just like that light, our mind also reacts and distinguishes.
But like reflections, they need time and space to appear to continue, though they disappeared long ago, didn't they?
Our consciousness moves between sense organs and brain cells, but that mind—that light—vanished long ago.
Thus, we are lost in the incessant reactions of consciousness, identifying them as "self," and becoming trapped in the five aggregates.
Mistakenly believing there is truly this body and this reacting mind.
Understand this principle of the dependent origination of life.
When you understand this, whenever you feel "there is something," it is certainly an illusion from the previous thought.
When you feel "something" exists, an opposing or corresponding object will inevitably appear at the same time.
What happens then?
The Earth rotates, and bicycle wheels spin. Why?
This is like the principle of a seesaw.
Distinctions, comparisons, and oppositions are the two ends of this scale.
When you stand on one side, the desire to pursue and the impulse to reject arise simultaneously.
This propels you towards the other side, causing you to move back and forth between extremes without end.
If your left side feels uncomfortable, you shift right; if the right feels uncomfortable, you shift left.
This constant shifting doesn't truly help.
Ultimately, you still need to adjust your mind to achieve equanimity, don't you?
So our Earth is like a fool; running around is pointless!
We need to eliminate these delusions of distinction and opposition, don't we?
When you feel "something" exists, there is inevitably a corresponding "nothing" in opposition.
It's as if you are drawing a bow, where there is a contrast between the bow and the string.
Within this, there is an energy that maintains balance.
And this power that maintains balance is precisely the activity of the "mind."
Yet, no matter which way you pull, it remains in the equilibrium of the circle formed by the string.
Because we fail to see that this interdependent relationship is already in balance,
We become lost in actions driven by comparison, constantly moving back and forth.
Beyond detaching from the mind of opposition to settle your mind,
Have you noticed there is a space that allows this mind of opposition to arise and move about?
This space is vast and limitless!
This space, free from attachment, is a space of non-self, infinite.

Is infinity "existence" or "non-existence"?
When there is neither "existence" nor "non-existence," it is truly an infinite, non-self space.
Does "non-self" entail a reality of opposition?
No!

Whenever something appears in your mind, it is always a form of dualistic illusion.
Because it is an illusion produced by sluggish memory, and it will change very soon.
Thus, all things—including your mind—will certainly change and disappear.
This is the phenomenon of "impermanence" (Anicca) of body and mind.
Because it lacks the conditions for inherent existence; what always exists is the ultimate truth of non-self.
This "non-self, infinite" is our original mind.
The mind with opposition is an illusory, unreal mind; it is a delusion.
Just as blurred vision makes one moon appear as two, our minds give rise to discriminations and delusive thoughts.
If we understand this theoretically but cannot let go of attachment, what should we do?
Then, it is time for us to practice!
Earlier, we mentioned the infinite space of "non-self."
Because we do not understand "reality"—that the present moment is naturally "non-self,"
Temporary phenomena arise due to mistaken judgments, dualistic distinctions, and memories.
The combination of these temporary phenomena constitutes our life experience.
Combined with the material elements, these form the sensations and conscious patterns of this physical body.
Since these are temporary results of mistaken judgment, we can say life experience is a kind of "illusion."
We must first acknowledge the "illusion" before we can embark on the path to liberation from it.
The first step to liberation is "understanding the facts."
To understand means to be free from random thoughts. Where are these "facts"?
Naturally, they are the present psycho-physical phenomena of your own being.
Perceiving the facts of your own phenomena is called "understanding the self" in meditation terminology.
How do we understand the self? We will introduce this step by step in the future.
