法友們,我們為什麼會升起五蓋的煩惱呢?
Dear Dharma friends, why do we experience the afflictions of the Five Hindrances?
這五蓋:貪欲蓋、瞋恚蓋、睡眠蓋、掉悔蓋(掉舉),還有疑蓋,遠離五蓋煩惱也是禪修者的必要條件。
These Five Hindrances are: the hindrance of sensual desire, the hindrance of ill-will, the hindrance of sloth and torpor, the hindrance of restlessness and remorse (agitation), and the hindrance of doubt. Freedom from these Five Hindrances is also a necessary condition for meditators.
我們為什麼會升起這五種煩惱呢?它們還是有原因的!
Why do these five types of afflictions arise within us? They do have their reasons!
為什麼我們生起貪欲蓋呢?
Why do we experience the hindrance of sensual desire?
貪欲是因為我們接觸,有感官還有外面的環境,還有你的心識,它們三者合接觸,進而升起其他我們內心運作的思想、感受、行為。
Sensual desire arises because of contact, involving our senses, the external environment, and our consciousness. When these three come together in contact, they give rise to other internal mental operations such as thoughts, feelings, and actions.
因為你接觸產生慾望追求,主要是我們沒有正思維,沒有正思維它(萬物)是無常、無我的。
Because your contact generates desires and pursuits, this is mainly due to our lack of right thought, or the inability to reflect wisely that all things are impermanent and without a self.
那瞋恚呢?
What about ill-will?
瞋恚是一種障礙,障礙你,覺得不自在、不自由、受到阻礙,所以你內心產生不正確的思維,就起了瞋恚。
Ill-will is a hindrance that obstructs you, making you feel uneasy, unfree, and impeded. This leads to incorrect thinking within your mind, giving rise to ill-will.
起瞋恚你如果沒有去對治,那就會增廣。
If you do not counteract ill-will when it arises, it will intensify and expand.
那睡眠是怎麼升起呢?
How does sloth and torpor arise?
睡眠有可能是你身體微弱了?心裡頭不好要、缺少活力,或是你平常養成懈怠的習慣。
Sloth and torpor might arise because your body is weak, your mind feels unwilling or lacks vitality, or perhaps you've habitually developed a tendency towards laziness.
在這種情況下,你又沒有正確的思維、提起覺照的力量,那你的惛沈睡眠就越來越嚴重,最後影響我們的生活。
In such circumstances, if you also lack right thought and the strength to arouse awareness, then your dullness and sloth will become increasingly severe, ultimately affecting your life.
那調舉掉悔是怎麼生起的呢?
And how do restlessness and remorse arise?
是你想著你的親戚朋友啊、你喜歡跟人的地方、好要面子啊、喜歡那個誇耀自己啊、喜歡人去吹捧你啊、還有你喜歡那天上快樂的生活啊、還有你本來就喜歡唱歌跳舞啊、娛樂啊,浪費自己的時間呢!
It's when you think about your relatives and friends, places you enjoy being with people, wanting to save face, liking to boast about yourself, enjoying being praised, or perhaps you yearn for a heavenly, joyful life, or you simply enjoy singing, dancing, and entertainment – wasting your time!
你自己這樣憶念,然後別人也這樣的憶念,所以彼此就增長在這種,每天就在心不平靜、追求沒有必要的,心就是調舉。
When you recollect these things in this way, and others also recall them, then both parties are cultivating a state where the mind is daily unpeaceful, pursuing unnecessary things – this is restlessness.
什麼是懷疑蓋呢?
What is the hindrance of doubt?
懷疑就是懷疑過去、懷疑未來啊怎麼樣啊、懷疑現在是有什麼事情呢。
Doubt means questioning the past, wondering about the future, and doubting what is happening in the present moment.
所以心裡頭東想西想,對過去產生猶豫啊、未來產生猶豫啊、現在的事情一直猶豫不決啊。
So, your mind wanders here and there, generating hesitation about the past, uncertainty about the future, and continuous indecision about present matters.
這樣沒有正確的思維,所以心裡頭一直處在一種不確定的狀態。
Without right thought in this way, your mind constantly remains in a state of uncertainty.
這些其實全部都是因為我們沒有正確的正思維。
In fact, all of these arise because we lack correct and wise reflection.
那我們貪欲的時候要怎麼對治呢?
So, how do we counteract sensual desire when it arises?
貪欲最好的方法就是用「不淨觀」的了解,心專注在觀察身體,或(思維)身體會像死(屍)一樣的骯髒、臭爛、不乾淨,這種方法很容易對治我們的貪欲。
The best method for sensual desire is to understand and practice "contemplation of impurity," where the mind focuses on observing the body, or contemplating how the body will be like a dead corpse – dirty, decaying, and impure. This method easily counteracts our sensual desires.
還有瞋恚呢?我們就要時常學習「慈悲心」,有慈心的思維。
And for ill-will? We should constantly cultivate "loving-kindness," fostering thoughts of compassion.
這樣就可以讓瞋恚不容易生起來,慢慢久而久之就消失了,隨時能夠慈愛眾生並給予快樂,這是最好對治瞋恚的方法。
This makes ill-will less likely to arise and, gradually over time, it disappears. Being able to always extend loving-kindness to all beings and wish them happiness is the best way to counteract ill-will.
那什麼是(對治)睡眠蓋呢?
What about counteracting the hindrance of sloth and torpor?
睡眠就你沒有一種覺照力,覺照力呢?你睡覺之前可以用一種「光明想」,那你的睡覺可以清清楚楚。
Sloth and torpor arise when you lack a certain awareness. For awareness, before sleeping, you can practice a "light perception" or visualization, which can keep your sleep clear and lucid.
也就是你隨時用智慧的觀照知道真實的情況,排除那些惛沈。
That is, you constantly use wise observation to know the true situation, dispelling that dullness.
如何讓掉舉能夠停止呢?
How can we bring restlessness to a halt?
就是時常地思維這種「生命的緣起」的道理。
It is by constantly contemplating the principle of "dependent origination" of life.
如實地觀照世間一切有為法,皆是種種的因緣條件合而合而成。
To truly observe that all conditioned phenomena in the world arise from the confluence of various causes and conditions.
任何的事物皆因各種條件相互依存而變化的,所以生命是無常、無我的。
Everything changes due to the mutual interdependence of various conditions; thus, life is impermanent and without a self.
常常這樣思維,內心排除那些執著的煩惱,這樣就會遠離掉悔不安。
By reflecting in this way often, eliminating the afflictions of attachment within your mind, you will move away from restlessness and uneasiness.
如果我們剛開始沒辦法,我們的練習裡面有「呼吸的法門」(安那般那),這很容易讓我們的心安定下來。時常地練習,有助於我們的心(遠離)掉悔不安。
If we find it difficult at first, within our practice, there is the "method of breath" (Anapanasati), which can easily settle our minds.Frequent practice helps our minds to move away from restlessness and uneasiness.
